The late summer dawn
smells of farewells,
first light diffusing,
parting from Earth
like old lovers parting
from night’s embrace,
gently, the riversongs
flow forth hushed lauds,
calling us from dreams,
slow flowing aureate brilliance
glowing through leaves, shadows,
angles, patterns of light
counseling contemplation
of fall, the falling of leaves,
the giving way of green
to gold, of summer
to fall, to earth’s long
sleep beneath blankets
of snow, our spirits dreaming
hope, trusting life
circling round, recalling
in each descent,
the rising,
green and new.
